SMH Weekly Digest: Issue #006 – Generalist or Specialist: Which is the Right Path for You?

Inside the Industry

Why trust is your most important currency to a sustained sports media career

In a fast-moving industry built around access, relationships, and storytelling, trust remains one of the most valuable currencies in sports media.

It’s easy to assume that opportunities come from visibility alone, but in reality, access tends to grow from consistency, professionalism, and reliability over time.

Whether you’re a journalist building relationships with sources, a communications professional managing stakeholders, or a creator navigating partnerships, trust sits at the centre of how the industry operates.

Understanding how that trust is earned, and why it matters more than short-term exposure, can help aspiring professionals focus on the habits that truly build long-term credibility.

It’s not always the most visible part of the job, but it’s often the foundation that allows everything else to happen.

Generalist vs Specialist: Which Path Should You Take?

One of the most common questions from people entering the industry is whether they should aim to become a specialist or keep their options open as a generalist.

Both paths can lead to meaningful opportunities, but the right approach often depends on your role, your strengths, and how the modern sports media landscape is evolving.

Today’s industry rewards depth in certain areas while still valuing adaptability, which means finding the balance between focus and flexibility becomes an important part of early career development.

Understanding how different roles approach this question can help you make more confident decisions about where to invest your time and energy.

This week’s Career Insight explores the advantages and challenges of both approaches and how to think about your own direction in a way that feels intentional rather than overwhelming.

From My Week

A week dedicated to horse racing

I’m back in AlUla this week, writing from AlFursan Endurance, and it’s been another early start. Friday’s race began with a beautiful cold morning coordinating media at the start line.

The moment the sun rose over the sandstone rocks and the horses disappeared into the distance, these are the kinds of moments that remind you why live sport carries such a powerful sense of atmosphere.

The welcome event ran smoothly, followed by a great evening sharing dinner with the attending media on Thursday; such evenings are just as important for relationship-building as the action on the course itself.

Friday then culminated with a thrilling finish that saw Saudi rider Muhannad Alsalmi win the 120km race for the second year running. Just check out those celebrations below!

AlFursan Endurance is an event that requires constant coordination between client teams, media partners, and wider stakeholders to ensure everything runs seamlessly, and it’s been rewarding to see the event come together so far.

Alongside the work on site, I’ve also been closely involved with Qiddiya on the announcement of their new Horse Racing Venue, which will eventually host the Saudi Cup, the world’s richest horse race.

The announcement generated significant media attention, which reinforces a simple but powerful truth: strong storytelling drives engagement.

Whether you’re working in journalism or communications, the core question remains the same: what makes this story interesting, and why should audiences care? That mindset sits at the heart of everything we do in sports media.
