SMH Weekly Digest: Issue #003 – Which Sports Media Career Path is Right for You?
Inside the Industry
Inside the Modern Sports Media Ecosystem
The sports media landscape today is far more layered than it once was. Traditional journalism, communications, content creation, production, and digital strategy no longer operate in separate lanes; they exist as part of a connected ecosystem where stories move across platforms and audiences expect content to meet them wherever they are.
For anyone starting out, this can feel overwhelming. Job titles blur, new roles emerge, and the industry often looks more complex than it really is.
But once you understand how the different parts of the ecosystem connect, from reporters and producers to PR professionals and creators, it becomes easier to see where your own strengths and ambitions might fit.
This week’s industry insight looks at how the modern sports media structure works and why understanding the bigger picture can help you make more confident career decisions.
Career Insight
Which Sports Media Career Path is Right for You?
One of the most common questions from aspiring professionals is simple: Where do I even begin?
With so many potential pathways (journalism, content creation, communications, production, social media, and more), it’s easy to feel unsure about which direction to take.
The truth is that there isn’t a single “right” entry point into sports media. The best starting point usually comes from understanding your strengths, interests, and the type of work that genuinely excites you. From there, progress becomes far more focused and intentional.
This week’s Career Insight explores how to start thinking about your own path and how different roles within sports media offer different ways to build momentum early on.
From My Week
Dispatch from AlUla Desert Polo
I’m writing this week’s newsletter from AlUla, surrounded by the spectacular landscapes that make this part of the world so unique.
This week’s focus has been the AlUla Desert Polo, an event that brings together some of the biggest stars in the sport while celebrating equestrianism, something deeply rooted in the region’s heritage.
While the event itself may look effortless from the outside, the lead-up and on-site work require a huge amount of coordination. Much of the focus has been on media and influencer relations, alongside managing the broader communications strategy for our client.
Responsibilities throughout the week have included overseeing press conferences, writing speeches for the welcome ceremony, crafting daily press releases, producing feature content, and ensuring the event receives strong international media exposure.
It’s been a brilliant experience, and a reminder of how powerful sport can be when it connects culture, heritage, and storytelling.
And if you ever have the chance to visit AlUla, take it. It’s a truly magical place.
